The Story

The Savannah is the largest domestic cat breed — a hybrid between the African Serval (Leptailurus serval) and domestic cats, producing a tall, spotted, wild-looking cat of extraordinary athleticism and intelligence. First generation (F1) Savannahs are 50% Serval and can weigh up to 11 kg; later generations (F4 and beyond) are smaller and more domesticated. The breed is named for the Serval's native African savannah habitat. Savannahs are banned or restricted in many jurisdictions — in Australia they are completely banned; in the UK and several US states, early generations require permits. They are legal in most Indian states but potential owners should verify local regulations.

Physical Profile

Savannah

Source: wikimedia

Savannahs are extraordinarily tall and long-legged for a domestic cat — with a small head relative to body, very large cupped ears set high, a long neck, and a coat covered in large, bold dark spots on a golden or silver background. The distinctive "cheetah tear marks" (dark lines running from the inner eye corner down the muzzle) are a characteristic feature. Early generation Savannahs look unmistakably wild; later generations retain the spotted pattern and large ears but with more domestic proportions.

Temperament & Personality

Savannahs are bold, curious, and intensely loyal to their primary person — they often bond to one person and follow them everywhere like a dog. They are fearless and will investigate everything. They love water. They can be taught to walk on a leash and to fetch. Early generations (F1–F3) are not suitable for typical households — they require considerable space, specialist nutrition, and experienced ownership. Later generations (F4+) are manageable as pets for active, experienced cat owners.

Care & Wellness

Professional Care Protocol

Ear Cleaning
Nail Trimming
Special Eye Care
Grooming: not-required
  • Very large indoor/outdoor enclosure or dedicated cat room. Enrichment is critical — puzzle feeders, tall cat trees (Savannahs can jump to extraordinary heights — over 2.5 metres vertically). Daily interactive play of 1+ hour. High-protein diet. Legal status must be verified before purchase. F1 and F2 Savannahs should only be considered by specialist owners.

Nutrition Notes

Serval × domestic (African Serval ancestry). F1-F3 need specialist diet (higher protein). SBT (F4+) = standard cat diet. Large breed (5-11 kg). High-protein essential.

Vaccination Schedule

Vaccination Schedule

CoreFVRCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia), Rabies
Non-CoreFeLV (Feline Leukaemia Virus), FIV, Chlamydia, Bordetella
Adult BoosterFVRCP: annually or every 3 years per product and risk. Rabies: annually or every 3 years per local law. FeLV: annually for at-risk cats. Annual wellness examination recommended.
Species NotesIMPORTANT: Modified live vaccines may cause adverse reactions in early-generation Savannahs. Use only killed/inactivated vaccines until veterinary guidance is obtained. Consult a vet experienced with hybrid cats before vaccinating F1–F3 Savannahs. Legal status must be verified in your jurisdiction before purchase.
Puppy / Kitten Schedule6–8 weeks: FVRCP; 10–12 weeks: FVRCP booster; 14–16 weeks: FVRCP booster + Rabies. FeLV recommended for outdoor/multi-cat households from 8 weeks.

Senior Care

HCM. Hybrid vigour in later generations. F1-F3 require exotic permits in many places. Tallest domestic cat breed. Serval ancestry. India: climate-appropriate but check exotic animal laws. 12-20 years.

Health Overview

Generally healthy due to hybrid vigour. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) occurs. Pyruvate kinase deficiency (PK Def) from domestic cat ancestry. Some early-generation Savannahs are sensitive to modified live vaccines — consult a vet experienced with hybrid cats before vaccinating. Anaesthetic protocols should be discussed with the vet given hybrid ancestry.

Common Conditions

Name: Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) • Severity: HIGH • Prevalence: OCCASIONAL • Description: Annual cardiac screening recommended.
Name: Vaccine Sensitivity (Modified Live) • Severity: HIGH • Prevalence: OCCASIONAL • Description: Some early-generation Savannahs may react adversely to modified live vaccines. Killed/inactivated vaccines should be used — consult a vet experienced with hybrid cats.
Name: Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency (PK Def) • Severity: MEDIUM • Prevalence: OCCASIONAL • Description: Inherited from domestic cat ancestry. DNA test available.

Fun Facts

01

The Savannah holds the Guinness World Record for tallest domestic cat — Arcturus Aldebaran Powers, a Savannah, measured 48.4 cm (19.05 in) at the shoulder.

02

Early generation (F1) Savannah cats can leap over 2.5 metres straight up from a standing position — a height accessible to few household environments.

03

Savannahs are illegal in Australia, where they are classified as a threatening exotic species due to concern about hybridisation with feral cat populations and predation on native wildlife.
