The Story
Ojos Azules ("Blue Eyes" in Spanish) is one of the rarest cat breeds in the world — a natural mutation discovered in feral cats in New Mexico in 1984 that produces intensely blue eyes in cats of any coat colour, including dark and non-colourpoint coats. In all other domestic cats, blue eyes are genetically linked to white coat colour or colourpoint restriction — a dark-coated cat with vivid blue eyes is otherwise impossible. The breed is still experimental and extremely rare. The OA gene is dominant but lethal when homozygous — all Ojos Azules must be bred with non-blue-eyed cats.

Moderate body type with no extreme conformation. The single defining characteristic is the eye colour — deep, vivid blue eyes in a cat of any coat colour and pattern, including solid black, tabby, or tortoiseshell. The contrast of blue eyes in a dark-coated cat is the breed's unique visual feature.

Professional Care Protocol
- •Same as a standard shorthaired domestic cat. NEVER breed Ojos Azules to Ojos Azules — the homozygous genotype causes cranial deformities and is lethal.
Nutrition Notes
Blue eyes in ANY coat colour — unique. HOMOZYGOUS Ojos Azules gene is LETHAL (cranial defects). NEVER breed Ojos × Ojos. Very rare.

Senior Care
Homozygous (Os/Os) is LETHAL — cranial deformities, white spots, stillbirth. Must only breed Ojos × non-Ojos. Blue eyes in any coat colour (unique among all cats). Discovered 1984 New Mexico. Extremely rare (<100 worldwide?). 10-12 years.

Health Overview
The homozygous OA gene causes stillbirth or cranial deformities — all Ojos Azules must be bred to non-OA cats. The resulting litters contain approximately 50% blue-eyed (OA/+) and 50% normal-eyed cats. The breed is so rare that health data is limited.

Fun Facts
The Ojos Azules mutation breaks a fundamental rule of cat coat genetics — blue eyes in cats are normally only possible with white coat, white spotting, or colourpoint restriction. The OA gene produces blue eyes through an entirely different, previously unknown mechanism.
The Ojos Azules breed is so rare that fewer than 10 cats were known to carry the gene in the early years of its documentation — the entire breed may still number in the hundreds worldwide.
