The Story

The Norwegian Forest Cat is an ancient natural breed from Scandinavia, built for survival in the harsh Norwegian climate — with a thick, waterproof double coat, large muscular body, and tufted paws designed for walking on snow. They appear in Norwegian folk tales and Norse mythology as the "Skogkatt" — a fairy cat who climbs rocks that no other cat could scale. The breed was near-extinction during World War II and was revived through a dedicated breeding programme. The national cat of Norway, the Norwegian Forest Cat is sometimes confused with the Maine Coon but has a more triangular head, almond-shaped rather than round eyes, and a straighter profile.

A large, strong, well-muscled cat with a distinctive equilateral triangle head shape, almond-shaped eyes, tufted ears, and a long, bushy tail. The coat is a double coat — a dense, woolly undercoat for insulation and a smooth, water-resistant top coat. In winter the coat is dramatically fuller with a full ruff; in summer much of the undercoat is shed. Large, tufted paws. The profile is straight from nose to brow.

Temperament & Personality

Norwegian Forest Cats are gentle, independent, and adaptable. They are affectionate with their family but not demanding — they prefer to participate in household life on their own terms. They are patient with children and other pets. They retain strong climbing and hunting instincts. They are quieter and less demanding than Siamese or Bengals but more active than Persians.

  • The double coat requires brushing 2–3 times weekly with significant increase during seasonal shedding periods. Their strong climbing instinct means cat trees and access to high perches are essential. They appreciate outdoor access if safe — they are skilled climbers.

Fun Facts

01

Norwegian Forest Cats appear in Norse mythology as companions of Freya, the Norse goddess of love and beauty — she was said to travel in a chariot pulled by two large cats believed to be Norwegian Forest Cats.

02

The Norwegian Forest Cat's coat is one of the most effective natural waterproofing systems of any domestic cat — the outer coat repels water so effectively that the cat can be in rain for extended periods without the undercoat becoming wet.

03

Wegies (as they are affectionately called) can descend tree trunks headfirst — a skill most cats do not have — due to their unusually flexible ankles that allow them to rotate the hind paws.
