The Story
The California Spangled is a rare and nearly extinct breed — a deliberate conservation-inspired spotted cat created in the 1970s by screenwriter Paul Casey with the specific goal of creating a leopard-like domestic cat to raise awareness about the poaching of wild spotted cats. Unlike the Bengal, the California Spangled was created entirely from domestic breeds with no wild cat genetics. It was famously (and controversially) launched in the 1986 Neiman Marcus Christmas catalogue for $1,400 — causing significant backlash for selling cats like luxury goods. The publicity was negative, and the breed never gained mainstream recognition.

The California Spangled is a lean, athletic, wild-looking cat with a long, low-slung body, high cheekbones, and a coat of clearly defined round or slightly oval spots on a contrasting background. The coat quality and spot definition were carefully selected to mimic wild spotted cats as closely as possible without using wild genetics.

Fun Facts
The California Spangled was the first conservation-themed cat breed — Paul Casey developed it specifically to make people feel they were living with a miniature leopard and thus more connected to wild cat conservation.
The 1986 Neiman Marcus Christmas catalogue listing was a PR disaster — animal welfare advocates protested the commercialisation, the cats sold at $1,400 each failed to generate enthusiasm, and the breed's development stalled shortly after.
