The Story

The Burmilla was created accidentally in 1981 when a lilac Burmese female escaped into a room with a chinchilla silver Persian male before their planned matings — the resulting kittens had an extraordinary silver-shaded coat and the sociable personality of the Burmese. Breeder Miranda von Kirchberg was so taken with the kittens that she began a deliberate breeding programme. The Burmilla combines the Burmese's affectionate, outgoing personality with the Chinchilla Persian's distinctive silver shaded coat — producing a particularly beautiful and sociable breed.

Physical Profile

Burmilla

Source: wikimedia

The Burmilla has a medium-sized, well-muscled Burmese-type body. The defining characteristic is the coat — short, dense, and with a distinctive silver or golden base colour with darker tipping or shading. The contrast between the pale silvery base and the darker tip gives the coat a shimmering, luminous quality. The eyes are outlined in dark liner-like pigment (the "Burmilla eye liner") against vivid green or amber irises.

Fun Facts

01

The Burmilla was created by a fortunate accident — the meeting of a Burmese and a Chinchilla Persian that were both awaiting scheduled matings with different cats. The resulting kittens were so beautiful that a new breed was born.

02

The distinctive "Burmilla eyeliner" — the dark pigmentation outlining the eyes — gives individuals a perpetually made-up, kohled appearance that enhances their vivid eye colour.
