The Story
The Australian Mist is Australia's only internationally recognised native cat breed — developed by Dr. Truda Straede over nine years beginning in 1976, specifically designed to produce a cat suited to indoor life in Australia's climate. The breed was carefully engineered from Burmese (for people-orientation and coat colour), Abyssinian (for ticking and activity), and Australian domestic shorthairs (for hardiness and adaptability). Originally called the "Spotted Mist," the name was changed to Australian Mist in 1998 when the marbled pattern was added. The breed is notably tolerant of being handled, making it ideal for families with children.

Physical Profile

The Australian Mist is a medium-sized, well-muscled cat of moderate foreign type. The coat is the defining feature — a warm, misty background of ticking (from Abyssinian ancestry) overlaid with either spots (spotted variety) or swirling marbled tabby patterns (marbled variety). The background ticking gives the coat a delicate "mist" quality — as if the pattern is seen through gauze. Large, expressive eyes.

Fun Facts
The Australian Mist is the only cat breed in the world that was specifically designed from the beginning to be a family indoor cat — its temperament, activity level, and tolerance for handling were all primary design criteria rather than appearance.
The breed was developed by a single person — Dr. Truda Straede — over nine years of careful breeding from 1976 to 1985. She is credited with one of the most successful single-person breed development programmes in cat fancy history.
The Australian Mist was originally called the "Spotted Mist" — when the marbled tabby pattern was formally added to the breed standard in 1998, the name was broadened to reflect both patterns.
