The Story
The Turkish Van is an ancient natural breed from the Lake Van region of eastern Turkey — a large, athletic, semi-long-haired cat uniquely famous for its love of water and swimming. The breed's pattern — white body with colour restricted to the head and tail — is the origin of the term "Van pattern" used to describe this colouration in all cat breeds. The Turkish Van is considered a national treasure in Turkey, and the all-white "Van cat" with odd eyes (one blue, one amber) is particularly revered. The breed's water-repellent coat — cashmere-like in texture — is thought to be an adaptation to the Lake Van environment where the cats were observed swimming.

The Turkish Van is a large, muscular, well-built cat with a broad, wedge-shaped head and medium-length, semi-fluffy coat of cashmere-like texture. The defining colour pattern is "Van" — pure chalk white body with coloured markings on the head (a blaze across the forehead and/or ear patches) and a fully coloured tail. The coat is single-layered (no dense undercoat) and feels water-repellent. Eyes are vivid blue, amber, or odd-eyed (one of each).

Temperament & Personality
Turkish Vans are independent, assertive, and athletic — they are not lap cats. They are highly active and need significant space and climbing opportunities. Their water affinity is real — many Turkish Vans will voluntarily enter water. They are intelligent and on their own terms affectionate but do not like being constrained. They can be assertive with other pets.

Professional Care Protocol
- •The cashmere-like single coat is easier to maintain than the Persian — brushing 1–2 times weekly. Provide large, enriched spaces with climbing opportunity. Their water affinity means bathroom doors may need to be kept closed. Not suitable for small apartments.

Fun Facts
Turkish Van cats from the Lake Van region have been observed swimming in the lake to catch fish — this hunting behaviour is unique among domestic cat breeds and gives them their nickname "the swimming cat."
The all-white Turkish Van cat with one blue and one amber eye is depicted on the Turkish lira banknotes and is considered a symbol of the city of Van in eastern Turkey.
The Turkish Van's coat has a unique "waterproofing" quality — the single-layer cashmere-like coat repels water effectively, drying rapidly after immersion, which facilitates their water-loving behaviour.
