The Story

The Toyger was created by breeder Judy Sugden (daughter of Bengal breed pioneer Jean Mill) with the explicit goal of producing a domestic cat resembling a toy tiger. Unlike the Bengal (which uses wild cat hybrids) or the Ocicat (which uses multiple breeds), the Toyger was developed entirely from striped domestic shorthairs — selectively breeding for the specific circular, branching stripe pattern that mimics the tiger's coat. The breed programme began in the 1980s and continues to be refined. The Toyger has no wild cat genetics.

Physical Profile

Toyger

Source: wikimedia

The Toyger has a medium-large, muscular, rolling body and a long, deep-chested conformation. The distinctive coat has bold, dark, branching stripes arranged in a circular pattern on the body (rather than the linear mackerel stripes of an ordinary tabby), combined with circular head markings and white ventral (belly and inner leg) colouring — all features specifically selected to mimic tiger patterning.

Vaccination Schedule

Vaccination Schedule

CoreFVRCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia), Rabies
Non-CoreFeLV (Feline Leukaemia Virus), FIV, Chlamydia, Bordetella
Adult BoosterFVRCP: annually or every 3 years per product and risk. Rabies: annually or every 3 years per local law. FeLV: annually for at-risk cats. Annual wellness examination recommended.
Species NotesIndoor-only cats have lower vaccine requirements than outdoor cats. FeLV and FIV testing recommended before introducing new cats to a household. Dental disease is the most common preventable health problem in cats — annual dental assessment important. Spay/neuter recommended at 4–6 months.
Puppy / Kitten Schedule6–8 weeks: FVRCP; 10–12 weeks: FVRCP booster; 14–16 weeks: FVRCP booster + Rabies. FeLV recommended for outdoor/multi-cat households from 8 weeks.

Health Overview

Generally healthy. HCM. Heart murmurs have been documented in some lines — cardiac screening important. Generally a healthy breed with no specific hereditary conditions documented beyond the standard feline concerns.

Common Conditions

Name: Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) • Severity: HIGH • Prevalence: OCCASIONAL • Description: Annual cardiac screening from age 2 recommended. Some early lines had elevated murmur rates.

Fun Facts

01

The Toyger was created to raise awareness and conservation interest in real tigers — breed founder Judy Sugden specifically cited the goal of connecting ordinary people to wild tiger conservation through the miniature tiger in their home.

02

A wild-caught domestic cat from India was imported into the Toyger breeding programme by Judy Sugden in the 1990s to introduce the circular mackerel spot pattern seen on the head — this Indian cat's genetic contribution is part of the Toyger's origin story.

03

The Toyger's stripe pattern is still being refined through selective breeding — it remains a "work in progress" breed, with each generation moving slightly closer to the tiger-like ideal.
