The Story

The Sokoke is one of the rarest domestic cat breeds in the world — a naturally occurring breed from the Arabuko-Sokoke coastal forest of Kenya, discovered by Jeni Slater in 1978 among the semi-feral Khadzonzo cats of the region. The breed has an unusual ancestry — DNA analysis suggests the Sokoke may represent one of the most genetically distinct domestic cat populations, with possible descent from a separate domestication event or ancient wild cat hybridisation in the East African coastal region. The Sokoke is among the least numerous of all TICA/FIFe-recognised breeds globally.

Physical Profile

Sokoke

Source: wikimedia

The Sokoke is a medium-sized, lean, and very athletic cat with a distinctive coat pattern — the modified blotched tabby has a "wood-grain" quality with a bark-like texture appearance, distinctly different from the typical classic tabby swirls. The body is long-legged and slender. The coat is very short, close-lying, and has minimal undercoat. The hind legs are notably longer than the front legs, giving an unusual tilted posture.

Vaccination Schedule

Vaccination Schedule

CoreFVRCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia), Rabies
Non-CoreFeLV (Feline Leukaemia Virus), FIV, Chlamydia, Bordetella
Adult BoosterFVRCP: annually or every 3 years per product and risk. Rabies: annually or every 3 years per local law. FeLV: annually for at-risk cats. Annual wellness examination recommended.
Species NotesIndoor-only cats have lower vaccine requirements than outdoor cats. FeLV and FIV testing recommended before introducing new cats to a household. Dental disease is the most common preventable health problem in cats — annual dental assessment important. Spay/neuter recommended at 4–6 months.
Puppy / Kitten Schedule6–8 weeks: FVRCP; 10–12 weeks: FVRCP booster; 14–16 weeks: FVRCP booster + Rabies. FeLV recommended for outdoor/multi-cat households from 8 weeks.

Health Overview

Generally a very healthy breed with no documented breed-specific genetic conditions — the wild-type genetics and small breeding population have maintained robust health. Regular veterinary checks recommended.

Common Conditions

Name: Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) • Severity: HIGH • Prevalence: RARE • Description: Rare in the breed. Annual cardiac screening from age 5 as routine health check.

Fun Facts

01

DNA analysis of the Sokoke suggests it may represent a genetically distinct cat population from the East African coast — with possible ancestry separate from the typical Near Eastern domestic cat lineage. It may be one of the oldest surviving regional domestic cat populations.

02

The Arabuko-Sokoke forest, the breed's native habitat, is Kenya's largest remaining coastal forest — a biodiversity hotspot and the Sokoke cat's natural home alongside the Sokoke scops owl and Sokoke pipit, both named after the same forest.

03

The Sokoke is classified as a "natural breed" by FIFe — meaning it developed without deliberate human selective breeding, originating from the semi-feral Khadzonzo cat population of coastal Kenya.
