The Story
The Kurilian Bobtail is a natural breed from the Kuril Islands — a volcanic island chain stretching between the Russian Kamchatka Peninsula and the Japanese island of Hokkaido. The natural bobtail mutation has been present in the island's cat population for at least 200 years. The breed is closely related to the Japanese Bobtail in geography and tail type but is genetically distinct — larger and more robust, adapted to the colder, more rugged Kuril environment. The Kurilian is exceptionally healthy and long-lived due to centuries of natural selection.

Health Overview
One of the healthiest domestic cat breeds — natural selection on isolated islands has produced a robust, genetically diverse population with few hereditary conditions. HCM occurs at low rates. The bobtail gene does not cause spinal problems (different gene from Manx).

Fun Facts
The Kurilian Bobtail is an exceptional fisher — the breed developed on islands where fish was the primary protein source, and individuals have been observed catching fish from streams and coastal shallows.
The bobtail gene in Kurilian Bobtails is different from that of the Japanese Bobtail, Manx, and American Bobtail — the Kuril Islands developed their own independent bobtail mutation over centuries of geographical isolation.
