The Story

The Kanaani (meaning "Canaanite" — referring to the ancient Levant region) is a rare Israeli breed developed in the 1990s by Doris Pollatschek, who crossed Oriental Shorthairs with wild African Wild Cats (Felis lybica — the ancestor of all domestic cats) from the Negev desert to produce a lean, athletic, spotted breed with a distinctly wild appearance. Named for the biblical Canaan (the ancient name for the Levant region), the Kanaani is one of only a handful of breeds to incorporate modern first-generation wild cat genetics. The African Wild Cat is the direct ancestor of all domestic cats, making the Kanaani a deliberate back-cross to the original ancestor.

Temperament & Personality

Active, intelligent, and loyal to their primary person — Kanaani cats form strong bonds but retain the independence of their wild cat heritage. They are highly active and need significant space and enrichment. They are not suited to apartment living or households with small children. Their intelligence makes them highly trainable.

Vaccination Schedule

Vaccination Schedule

CoreFVRCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia), Rabies
Non-CoreFeLV (Feline Leukaemia Virus), FIV, Chlamydia, Bordetella
Adult BoosterFVRCP: annually or every 3 years per product and risk. Rabies: annually or every 3 years per local law. FeLV: annually for at-risk cats. Annual wellness examination recommended.
Species NotesConsult a veterinarian experienced with hybrid cats before vaccinating early-generation Kanaani. Killed/inactivated vaccines preferred for early generations. Later generation (F4+) individuals follow standard feline vaccine protocols.

Health Overview

Generally healthy due to hybrid vigour from wild cat ancestry. HCM may occur from Oriental Shorthair lineage. Vaccine protocols for early generation individuals should be discussed with an experienced vet — modified live vaccine sensitivity possible in very early generations.

Common Conditions

Name: Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) • Severity: HIGH • Prevalence: OCCASIONAL • Description: From Oriental Shorthair lineage. Annual cardiac screening from age 2 recommended.
Name: Vaccine Sensitivity (Early Generations) • Severity: HIGH • Prevalence: RARE • Description: Very early generation individuals may have sensitivity to modified live vaccines due to wild cat heritage. Consult an experienced exotic veterinarian regarding vaccine protocols.

Fun Facts

01

The African Wild Cat (Felis lybica) used in the Kanaani's development is the direct ancestor of all domestic cats — the domestication of Felis lybica in the Near East approximately 10,000 years ago gave rise to every domestic cat on Earth. The Kanaani is a back-cross to this original ancestor.

02

The Kanaani's development in Israel is fitting — the Near East (including what is now Israel) is where domestic cat history began, making the Kanaani a breed with a particularly direct connection to the region where cats were first domesticated.

03

The name "Kanaani" refers to Canaan — the ancient Near Eastern region that encompassed modern-day Israel, Palestine, Lebanon, and parts of Syria and Jordan. The breed's name thus connects it directly to the ancient geography of cat domestication.
