The Story

The Chinchilla Persian is a colour variety of the Persian — distinguished by its breathtaking silver or golden coat where only the very tips of the hairs are darker, creating a shimmering, sparkling effect over a pure white or warm cream base. The Chinchilla is often considered the most beautiful of all Persian varieties. It has slightly less extreme facial features than the modern Extreme Persian — a slightly longer nose and larger, more open eyes (typically vivid emerald or blue-green) — giving it a somewhat more moderate appearance. The Chinchilla originated in the UK in the late 1800s and was one of the earliest Persian varieties to be selectively bred for a specific coat effect.

The Chinchilla has the Persian's large, round, cobby body and very long, dense coat, but with slightly less extreme facial features than the modern Extreme Persian. The coat is pure white at the base with black tipping (silver variety) or brown tipping (golden variety) on only the very end of each hair — creating a luminous, sparkling quality. The eyes are distinctive — vivid emerald or blue-green, outlined in black, giving a kohl-lined appearance.

Temperament & Personality

Same as Persian — calm, gentle, quiet, and affectionate. The Chinchilla is perhaps slightly more active than the most extreme-faced Persians due to the slightly more moderate facial structure allowing better breathing.

Fun Facts

01

The Chinchilla Persian's distinctive emerald-green eyes outlined in black create an effect resembling eye makeup — a feature so striking that early breeders called it "the look of kohl" and it was one of the earliest specifically selected traits in the variety.

02

The Silver Chinchilla was reportedly one of Queen Victoria's favourite cat varieties — she exhibited Persian cats including Chinchillas at early British cat shows.

03

The Chinchilla name refers not to the South American Chinchilla rodent (whose fur has a similar tipped quality) but to the hair tipping effect — each hair is mostly pale with a darker tip, creating a shimmering quality in both species.
