The Story
The Chartreux is France's national cat breed — a robust, blue-grey cat of ancient lineage with a distinctively gentle, observant personality. They are said to have been raised by Carthusian monks at the Grande Chartreuse monastery in the French Alps, though this origin story is romantic rather than thoroughly documented. The Chartreux is visually similar to the Russian Blue and British Blue but is a genetically distinct breed — the combination of blue coat and vivid copper or orange eyes is unique to the Chartreux. They are famously quiet — to the point where some individuals are entirely mute.

Physical Profile

The Chartreux has a distinctive "smiling" expression from its relatively small, narrow muzzle set against a broad, rounded head. The coat is exclusively blue-grey in any shade from light ash to deep slate, with a characteristic woolly texture (like sheep's wool) and silver tipping. The eyes are copper, orange, or gold — never green. The body is robust and well-muscled. The legs are described as "fine-boned" relative to the substantial body.
