The Story

The British Shorthair is one of the oldest and most distinctively British cat breeds — a large, rounded, plush-coated cat that is thought to descend from the domestic cats brought to Britain by the Romans. It was one of the original breeds exhibited at the first modern cat show at Crystal Palace in 1871, where Harrison Weir used them to establish the standards for formal cat showing. The British Blue (the most iconic blue-grey variety) is widely recognised as the inspiration for the Cheshire Cat in Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The BSH's round face, dense plush coat, and independent yet affectionate personality have made it the most popular cat breed in the UK and one of the top 10 globally.

Physical Profile

British Shorthair

Source: wikimedia

The British Shorthair has a distinctive round, chubby appearance — a large, cobby body with broad chest, a round massive head with full cheeks, small rounded ears, and large round eyes (typically deep copper or gold in the blue variety, though colour varies by coat). The coat is very dense, plush, and crisp — it should spring back when pressed. The blue variety is the most iconic — solid blue-grey coat with deep copper or orange eyes.

Temperament & Personality

British Shorthairs are calm, dignified, and independent — they are affectionate on their own terms, preferring to sit nearby rather than on laps. They are not demanding cats — they are content to be around their owners without requiring constant interaction. They are quiet and rarely vocalise. They adapt well to apartment living and get along with other pets and children, though they prefer to be treated with respect rather than manhandled.

Care & Wellness

Professional Care Protocol

Ear Cleaning

Special Eye Care
Grooming: not-required
  • The dense plush coat requires brushing 1–2 times weekly to manage shedding and prevent hairballs. British Shorthairs are significantly prone to obesity — structured mealtimes rather than free-feeding are essential. Regular dental care. Annual vet check important as they can hide illness well.

Nutrition Notes

MOST obesity-prone cat breed — strict portion control essential. HCM. PKD in some lines. Haemophilia B — DNA test. Neonatal isoerythrolysis risk (blood type B common — critical for breeding).

Vaccination Schedule

Vaccination Schedule

CoreFVRCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia), Rabies
NoncoreFeLV (Feline Leukaemia Virus), FIV, Chlamydia, Bordetella

Fun Facts

01

The British Shorthair's round, smiling face and disappearing appearance is widely believed to have inspired Lewis Carroll's Cheshire Cat — Harrison Weir, who organised the first cat show and developed the British Shorthair standard, was a personal friend of Carroll.

02

The British Shorthair's coat is so plush and dense that it was specifically described by Harrison Weir as "the working man's cat" — hardy, adaptable, and requiring minimal coat care compared to long-haired breeds.

03

British Shorthairs are slow to mature — they don't reach full size until approximately 3–5 years of age, one of the slowest maturing of all cat breeds.
