The Story
The Puggle is a cross between the Pug and the Beagle — one of the most popular designer breeds of the 2000s. The cross was intended to reduce the Pug's significant brachycephalic health problems (breathing difficulties from flat face) by introducing the Beagle's longer muzzle, while retaining the Pug's affectionate, sociable temperament. In practice, Puggles vary considerably — some have a sufficiently longer muzzle to breathe better, while others retain significant brachycephalic features. The Beagle parent contributes a strong scenting instinct and vocal nature (howling/baying).

The Puggle was specifically conceived to address the Pug's serious breathing problems by adding the Beagle's longer muzzle — while some Puggles do breathe better than purebred Pugs, the improvement is not guaranteed and depends entirely on which parent's nose length the puppy inherits.
