The Story
The Puli is one of Hungary's most distinctive national breeds — a compact, agile herding dog draped in a coat of remarkable dreadlocks that form naturally from the interweaving of the double coat's outer corded strands with the soft undercoat. Used for over 1,000 years to herd and guard sheep on the Hungarian plains, the Puli is extraordinarily nimble — capable of jumping onto the backs of sheep and running across their backs — and remarkably weatherproof. The corded coat repels both water and cold with remarkable efficiency. Their black corded appearance led to the breed being nicknamed "the mop dog."

The Puli's coat is its defining and extraordinary feature — long, dense cords that form naturally over 3–5 years from the intertwining of the soft undercoat and harsh outer coat. The cords cover the entire body including the face, legs, and tail. The dog underneath the cords is athletic and muscular. Black is the most common and recognised colour internationally; grey, white, and fawn also occur. The tail merges with the body cords when the dog is at rest.
