The Story
The Afghan Hound is one of the most visually distinctive dog breeds in the world — a tall, elegant sighthound draped in a long, flowing, silky coat that cascades from every part of the body except the saddle (which remains short-haired). One of the oldest dog breeds, the Afghan Hound was used for hunting leopard, deer, and wolves in the mountainous terrain of Afghanistan, where the thick coat provided insulation against extreme cold and the enormous, arched, cat-like paws provided grip on rocky terrain. Paradoxically, the breed is both deeply dignified and aloof with strangers and a complete clown at home with its family.

Unmistakable — the long, flowing, silky coat that covers everything except the short-haired saddle, the distinctive hipbones set high and wide, the long topknot, the ring-curl tail, and the enormous padded feet with prominent knuckles. The head is long and refined. Any colour is permitted. The overall impression is of Eastern magnificence.

Temperament & Personality
Aloof, dignified, and independent with strangers — but a comedic, goofy, affectionate clown with its family. The Afghan Hound is famous for this personality paradox. Extremely independent — not obedient in any conventional sense. Strong prey drive means completely unreliable off-lead.

Care & Wellness
Professional Care Protocol
- •2+ hours exercise daily with free running in a secure area. The coat requires daily brushing with the correct technique (Indian ink, bathing every 2 weeks) — the most demanding grooming requirement of any dog breed. Sighthound anaesthetic sensitivity. Cold sensitive without the coat.
Nutrition Notes
Sighthound anaesthesia sensitivity. Lean build normal. Chylothorax (fatty fluid in chest) is breed-predisposed — low-fat diet may be therapeutic. Bloat risk (deep-chested). Omega-3 for the legendary coat.
Vaccination Schedule

Senior Care
Cataracts. Hypothyroidism. Chylothorax. Myelopathy (Afghan hound myelopathy — breed-specific spinal condition). Bloat. The first dog ever cloned (Snuppy, 2005, South Korea). Ranked last in Stanley Coren's intelligence study — but this reflects independence, not lack of intelligence. Long-lived for a large sighthound (12-14 years).

Fun Facts
The Afghan Hound's enormous, cat-like paws with prominent knuckles are a unique adaptation — the broad, arched paws with thick pads act as natural shock absorbers on the rocky mountain terrain of Afghanistan, allowing speed and agility on surfaces that would injure other breeds.
"Snuppy" — the first successfully cloned dog — was an Afghan Hound, cloned in 2005 by a South Korean research team at Seoul National University. The breed was chosen for the project because of its distinctive appearance that made identification of the clone straightforward.
