The Pudelpointer is a deliberately created versatile hunting dog — developed in Germany from 1881 onward by Baron von Zedlitz crossing the German Hunting Poodle (Pudel) with the English Pointer, aiming to combine the Poodle's intelligence, trainability, and water-retrieving ability with the Pointer's scenting ability, pointing instinct, and drive. The result is one of the most versatile gun dogs ever created — a point-flush-retrieve-track dog equally at home in marshland, forest, and field. The Pudelpointer is rare outside Germany and North America, where it has a small but dedicated following.

The Pudelpointer's development programme was unusually systematic — Baron von Zedlitz carefully recorded every cross and selected only the best hunting ability individuals for breeding, creating one of the earliest evidence-based selective breeding programmes for a gun dog.
Over 100 Pointer individuals were used in the development of the Pudelpointer — only 11 Poodles were used, because the Pointer's field instinct was considered dominant and only a small amount of Poodle influence was needed to add the desired traits.
