The Story
The Portuguese Water Dog was the indispensable working partner of the Portuguese fishermen (especially those of the Algarve coast) for centuries — swimming between boats to carry messages, herding fish into nets, retrieving lost gear from the sea, and guarding the catch. The traditional "lion clip" — rear end shaved, front half left in full coat — was not decorative but functional: it kept the hindquarters light in the water while protecting the chest and vital organs from cold. The breed nearly went extinct in the 20th century and was saved by Vasco Bensaúde, a Portuguese shipping magnate. Bo and Sunny Obama, the First Dogs of Barack Obama's presidency, were Portuguese Water Dogs.
