The Story
The Portuguese Sheepdog (Cão da Serra de Aires) is a shaggy herding dog from Portugal's Arrabida mountains — affectionately nicknamed the "Monkey Dog" in Portugal for its expressive, almost human-like face beneath the abundant beard and mustache. A versatile herder of sheep, cattle, pigs, and horses, the breed is rare outside Portugal. The long, goat-like coat (not woolly like some shepherd breeds — it falls in strands reminiscent of goat hair) is distinctive. The breed is animated, mischievous, and deeply loyal.
