The Story

The Nenets Herding Laika is the traditional reindeer herding dog of the Nenets people of the Yamal Peninsula — one of the world's last nomadic reindeer-herding cultures, living above the Arctic Circle in Russia. The Nenets Laika herds reindeer in extreme Arctic conditions, sleeping outside in temperatures of −50°C. It gained unexpected social media fame as the "Boo dog" or "real life teddy bear dog" for its extraordinarily fluffy, round-faced appearance — without anyone knowing what breed it actually was. It is closely related to the Samoyed (which was developed from the Nenets Laika type). Unlike the Samoyed, it is rarely seen outside Russia and is not fully internationally standardised.

Fun Facts

01

The Nenets Herding Laika went viral on social media multiple times as the "real life teddy bear dog" or "Boo dog look-alike" — viral photos of Nenets Laikas circulated globally without anyone identifying the breed, as it is almost unknown outside Russia.

02

The Samoyed was developed from Nenets Herding Laika-type dogs — the Samoyed people (from whom the breed takes its name) kept a dog nearly identical to the Nenets Laika, and the breed was standardised from these dogs when they reached Britain in the late 19th century.
