The Story
The Neapolitan Mastiff is one of the most ancient dog breeds in Europe — a direct descendant of the massive war dogs of the Roman Empire. It was rediscovered in Naples in the 1940s by Italian painter Piero Scanziani who formalised the breed standard. The breed's defining characteristic is its extraordinary loose, wrinkled skin — folds of skin hang from the head, neck, and body, giving it a mournful, prehistoric appearance. Fans is "Fluffy" in the Harry Potter films. It is one of the largest and heaviest dogs in the world, but also one of the shortest-lived. The extreme skin folding creates significant health maintenance requirements.

Fun Facts
"Fluffy" — the three-headed dog in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001) — was played by a Neapolitan Mastiff. The breed's ancient, prehistoric appearance made it the perfect choice for a creature guarding a secret.
The Neapolitan Mastiff was used by the Roman Army as a war dog — Julius Caesar described massive war dogs with loose, pendulous skin that fought alongside Roman soldiers. These dogs are the direct ancestors of the modern Neapolitan Mastiff.
