The Story

The Kangal Shepherd Dog is Turkey's national dog and the official national animal of Turkey — a large, powerful livestock guardian developed over centuries by the Yörük nomads of the Sivas region to protect sheep from wolves, bears, and jackals in the Anatolian plateau. Measured bite force studies have placed the Kangal among the dogs with the highest recorded bite force of any domestic dog breed. Despite this physical power, the Kangal has a notably calm, measured temperament with its own family — it is not aggressive without cause. A conservation programme using Kangals to protect livestock in Africa has helped reduce livestock predation by cheetahs, demonstrating the breed's effectiveness as a non-lethal predator deterrent.

Fun Facts

01

The Kangal Shepherd Dog is Turkey's national dog — it is the subject of state breeding programmes at Ankara University and is one of the most carefully controlled breed populations in Turkey, where export of pure Kangals has historically been restricted.

02

A conservation programme in Namibia, Botswana, and Kenya provides Kangal puppies to farmers as livestock guardians — the dogs effectively deter cheetahs, leopards, and other predators from killing livestock, providing an alternative to shooting predators. Cheetah Conservation Fund's Kangal programme has prevented thousands of predator deaths.

03

Bite force studies have measured the Kangal at approximately 743 PSI (pounds per square inch) — among the highest recorded for any domestic dog, reflecting the physical capability needed to deter large predators.
