The Story
The Kanni ("pure" or "maiden" in Tamil) is a rare, graceful sighthound from southern Tamil Nadu — closely related to the Chippiparai but distinct in colouration and origin. The Kanni was traditionally given to brides at weddings as a gift of good luck and protection — hence the name "maiden's beastmaster." The breed was never sold — giving a Kanni to a bride was considered an act of absolute trust and honour. The black-and-tan colouration on a sighthound body is distinctive and unusual. The breed is now extremely rare even in Tamil Nadu.

Fun Facts
The Kanni was traditionally given to Tamil brides as a wedding gift — a symbol of protection and good fortune. The giving of a Kanni was considered one of the highest honours a family could bestow, and the practice of "selling" a Kanni was culturally unacceptable.
The Kanni's black-and-tan colouration on a sighthound body is unique — no other sighthound breed worldwide has the same colour combination, making it one of the most visually distinctive Indian breeds.
