The Story
The Jonangi is one of India's most unusual and little-known native breeds — a small-to-medium hunting and herding dog from the coastal deltas of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. The breed is remarkable for two traits: it was traditionally used to herd ducks (one of very few dog breeds in the world bred specifically for duck herding), and it is virtually mute — the Jonangi communicates through yodelling sounds rather than conventional barking, making it one of the quietest dog breeds. Originally bred by the Jonangi fishing community along the Krishna-Godavari delta, the breed is now rare due to changes in traditional fishing and farming practices.

A medium-sized, lean, athletic dog of primitive type — slightly resembling the Indian Pariah Dog but with a more refined head. The coat is short, smooth, and single-layered. Wrinkles on the forehead are characteristic. The ears are erect or semi-erect. The tail is carried in a low curve. The overall impression is of a lightly built, alert, and elegant working dog.
