The Story
Widely considered the most beautiful finch in the world — a bird of extraordinary jewel-like colouration that looks almost artificial. Named after John Gould's wife Elizabeth. The wild population has declined dramatically and is now Endangered, while the species thrives in captivity. Three naturally occurring head colour morphs exist. More delicate than Zebra Finches and better suited to experienced finch keepers.

Fun Facts
Wild Gouldian Finches number fewer than 2,500 — the Australian government has established conservation breeding programmes.
Three head colour morphs are genetically determined: red-headed are homozygous recessive, black-headed dominant — genetics used as an early model in avian genetics research.
Gouldian Finches use ultraviolet light to assess potential mates — UV plumage patterns invisible to humans are used in mate selection.
