The Story

Possibly the most sexually dimorphic bird in the world — males are vivid emerald green while females are brilliant red and blue-purple. Early ornithologists classified them as completely different species for decades. Their unique long digestive tract (evolved for a high-fresh-food diet) makes them uniquely sensitive to artificial vitamins, preservatives, and food colourants that other parrots tolerate. An inappropriate diet causes serious health problems; an appropriate fresh-food diet produces a picture of health.

  • Large cage minimum 90 × 75 × 120 cm. At least 50% fresh food daily — leafy greens, pomegranate, capsicum, vegetables. Avoid artificial food colourants, preservatives, and excessive vitamin supplementation. Many standard bird-keeping resources are incorrect on Eclectus nutrition — seek specialist sources.

Vaccination Schedule

Vaccination Schedule

AdultboosterN/A
SpeciesnotesAnnual avian wellness examination by an avian-certified veterinarian is strongly recommended. Polyomavirus and Psittacosis (Chlamydia psittaci) vaccines exist for some species but are not universally recommended — discuss with your avian vet. Annual faecal parasite screening, crop cytology, and blood panel are standard avian preventive care.
PuppykittenscheduleN/A — birds do not follow standard vaccine schedules.

Health Overview

Feather plucking and toe-tapping (repetitive neurological movement) associated with over-supplementation and artificial additive exposure. High-sugar diets cause yeast overgrowth. Many Eclectus health issues are diet-related and fully preventable.

Common Conditions

Name: Feather Plucking / Toe-Tapping Syndrome • Severity: HIGH • Prevalence: COMMON • Description: Associated with excessive vitamin supplementation, artificial food additives, and high-protein diets. Resolves with dietary correction in many cases.
Name: Yeast (Candida) Overgrowth • Severity: MEDIUM • Prevalence: OCCASIONAL • Description: High-sugar fruit diets promote Candida in crop and GI tract. Vegetable-heavy balanced diet is protective.

Fun Facts

01

The male and female Eclectus were classified as completely separate species until John Gould examined specimens in 1873.

02

Eclectus Parrots have the longest digestive tract relative to body size of any parrot — an adaptation for their wild diet of unripe fruits requiring extended digestion.

03

Female Eclectus are more dominant in the wild than males — females control nesting hollows that multiple males compete to provision.
