The Story
The Merino Guinea Pig combines the long, curly coat of the Texel with the forehead coronet of the Coronet breed — producing a guinea pig with a long curly coat flowing from around a single forehead rosette. It is essentially a Texel with a Coronet. The Merino is considered one of the most challenging guinea pig breeds to keep in show condition, requiring the maintenance demands of both a long coat and a curly coat simultaneously, plus the care of a correctly positioned forehead rosette. It is less widely recognised internationally than the Coronet or Texel but has a dedicated following among specialist cavy breeders particularly in Europe.

Physical Profile

Long, curly or wavy coat covering the entire body, combined with a single forehead coronet (rosette). The combination produces a dramatically textured coat flowing in all directions from the forehead rosette. The curls are distributed through the entire coat length, creating a more three-dimensional effect than either the Coronet (straight coat + rosette) or the Texel (curly coat, no rosette) individually.

Professional Care Protocol
- •The most maintenance-intensive short list of commonly kept guinea pig breeds — requiring the daily grooming of the Texel (to manage curls) combined with the coronet care of the Coronet breed. Daily careful detangling using fingers and a wide-toothed comb. Regular perianal trimming. Pairs, hay, vitamin C.

Health Overview
Same as American Guinea Pig. Coat-related skin infection risk elevated due to the combination of length and curl trapping debris. The coronet area requires specific attention. Daily coat inspection important.

Fun Facts
The Merino Guinea Pig is named after the Merino sheep, which is world-famous for its exceptionally fine, curly wool — the comparison reflects the Merino guinea pig's distinctive curly long coat.
The Merino is one of the most recently developed guinea pig breeds and is still not universally recognised by all major cavy registries — some registries list it as a Texel variant rather than an independent breed.
In competitive cavy showing, a Merino must demonstrate both correct curl quality throughout the coat (as in the Texel) and a correctly positioned, symmetrical coronet (as in the Coronet) — meeting two independent breed standards simultaneously.
