The Story
The most common and popular guinea pig breed — the classic guinea pig of children's bedrooms globally. Domesticated in the Andes over 3,000 years ago. Guinea pigs are strictly social animals — they must be kept in pairs or groups, as solitary cavies develop serious behavioural and health problems. They communicate through an expressive range of vocalisations including the characteristic "wheek" of excitement and the full-body "popcorn" jump of joy.

Temperament & Personality
Gentle, curious, and social. Communicate through vocalisations — "wheek" (excitement), "purr" (contentment), "chut" (mild annoyance), "rumblestrutting" (dominance), "tooth chattering" (warning). They popcorn — leaping and twisting in the air when happy — one of the most endearing animal behaviours in pet keeping.

Professional Care Protocol
- •Guinea pigs MUST be kept in pairs at minimum. Minimum enclosure 120 × 60 cm for two. Unlimited hay is the most important dietary element — wears down continuously growing teeth while providing gut motility. Daily vitamin C from fresh vegetables (red pepper, leafy greens) or supplementation is essential. Minimum 1 hour floor time in a safe area daily.

Fun Facts
Guinea pigs have been eaten as a food source in the Andes for over 5,000 years — approximately 65 million are consumed annually in South America.
Guinea pigs cannot synthesise their own vitamin C — one of only a few mammals with this inability, along with humans and other primates.
"Popcorning" — leaping and twisting in the air — is a pure expression of joy, named for its resemblance to popcorn popping. Guinea pigs continue doing this throughout their lives.
