The Story
The Alpaca Guinea Pig combines the long coat and distinctive centre parting of the Peruvian with the curl or wave of the Texel. The result is a long, centre-parted coat with noticeable waves or loose curls throughout — less tightly curled than the Texel but with more texture than the flat Peruvian. Named for its resemblance to the wool of the alpaca animal — both share long, wavy, fine-textured fibre. The Alpaca is a show breed whose popularity has grown significantly in the US cavy show circuit. Like all long-coated breeds, it requires daily grooming and is not suitable for inexperienced guinea pig owners.

Long coat with a distinctive centre parting (from the Peruvian parent) combined with waves or loose curls throughout the coat length (from the Texel parent). The overall effect is of a long, textured, somewhat fluffy coat with gentle wave — less tightly curled than the Texel, less flat than the Peruvian. The coat can reach considerable length in show animals. The face typically has shorter, wavy hair.

Temperament & Personality
Same gentle, social temperament as other long-coated guinea pig breeds. Patient with handling and grooming — an important characteristic given the maintenance requirements.

Professional Care Protocol
- •Same as Peruvian — daily grooming with a wide-toothed comb to manage the wavy long coat. Regular perianal trimming essential. The wavy texture means the coat behaves somewhat differently from straight Peruvian coats — the waves resist lying flat and require specific grooming techniques to manage for show. Pairs, hay, vitamin C.

Health Overview
Same as American Guinea Pig. Coat-related skin infection risk from the combination of length and wave trapping debris. Same level of grooming attention required as the Peruvian and Silkie. Regular coat-parting for skin inspection.

Fun Facts
The Alpaca Guinea Pig's name is descriptive rather than geographic — the breed has no connection to South American alpacas, but its wavy long coat bears a visual and tactile similarity to quality alpaca fleece.
In US cavy show competition, the Alpaca is judged on both the quality of the centre parting (inherited from the Peruvian standard) and the quality of the wave or curl throughout the coat (inherited from the Texel standard) — requiring evaluators to assess two independent coat characteristics simultaneously.
The Alpaca's coat waves become more pronounced as the guinea pig matures — young Alpacas may show only gentle waviness in their coat that develops into more defined waves by adulthood, making age an important factor in show presentation.
