The Story
The Thai Ridgeback is one of only three ridgeback breeds in the world — sharing the distinctive ridge of reversed hair along the spine with the Rhodesian Ridgeback (Africa) and the Phu Quoc Ridgeback (Vietnam). An ancient, primitive breed from eastern Thailand, the Thai Ridgeback was used as a hunting dog, guard dog, and for cobra killing — cobras are common in Thailand and the breed developed a reputation for confronting and killing cobras, using speed and agility to avoid the strike. The breed has been largely isolated in Thailand for centuries and retains strong primitive characteristics.

A medium-large, lean, athletic, wedge-headed dog with a short, smooth coat and the characteristic ridge — a strip of hair growing in the reverse direction from the rest of the coat, forming distinctive patterns along the back. The skin folds and wrinkles on the forehead are also characteristic. Erect, forward-facing ears. The overall impression is of a lean, fast, powerful primitive dog.
