The Story
The Spanish Water Dog is an ancient versatile breed from Andalusia — used for centuries simultaneously as a herder (for cattle and sheep), a water retriever (for waterfowl), and an assistance dog for fishermen. It is one of the few breeds that genuinely excels in three completely different working roles. The curly, woolly coat forms natural cords (dreadlocks) if allowed to grow long — the traditional Andalusian working dogs were kept in corded coats. The modern show standard requires the coat to be clipped rather than corded. Recently the SWD has been studied in facial recognition research — a 2020 study found that the Spanish Water Dog can recognise human faces with 88% accuracy.
