The Shiba Inu is Japan's most popular and most internet-famous dog breed — the face of the "Doge" meme that became one of the internet's most recognised images. One of six native Japanese breeds and Japan's smallest, the Shiba was used to hunt small game and birds in Japan's mountainous terrain. Like the Akita, the Shiba is a designated Japanese Natural Monument. Despite looking like a fox or a plush toy, the Shiba is a complex, intelligent, and independent primitive breed with a very specific character that requires experienced, patient ownership.

The Shiba Inu has a striking, fox-like appearance — a compact, well-muscled body, a confident upright bearing, triangular erect ears, and a thick double coat in the characteristic Shiba red (ranging from orange-red to deep red) with urajiro (cream or white markings on the cheeks, underbody, inner limbs, and eyebrow spots). The tail curls firmly over the back. The expression is bold and intelligent. The "Shiba smile" — a characteristic upward curve to the mouth — is an endearing breed feature.
