The Story
The Portuguese Podengo Médio is the medium variety of Portugal's ancient Podengo breed — a primitive sighthound-type hunting dog that exists in three sizes (Pequeno, Médio, and Grande) and two coat types (smooth and wire). The Médio is the size traditionally used for rabbit hunting in Portugal's rocky terrain. The Podengo is one of Portugal's oldest breeds, descended from ancient Phoenician trading dogs brought to the Iberian Peninsula. The wire-coated variety has a charming, scruffy appearance very different from the smooth variety.

Fun Facts
Portuguese Podengos are believed to have arrived in Portugal with Phoenician traders approximately 3,000 years ago — making them one of the oldest dog breeds in Western Europe.
The three sizes of Podengo hunt differently — the Pequeno (small) goes underground, the Médio flushes from scrub, and the Grande (large) sights and courses. All three can work together in a single hunt.
