The Story
The Portuguese Podengo is an ancient primitive hunting breed from Portugal, possibly descended from dogs brought by Phoenician traders thousands of years ago. One of Portugal's national dog breeds, the Podengo comes in three sizes (Pequeño — small, Médio — medium, and Grande — large) and two coat varieties (smooth and wire). They were used to hunt rabbits (Pequeño), deer and fox (Médio), and wild boar (Grande). The Pequeño variety is the most widely kept internationally and has become increasingly popular as a companion dog due to its small size, hardiness, and cheerful personality.

The Portuguese Podengo has erect, large ears and a wedge-shaped head — a classic primitive sighthound/scent hound combination. The coat is either smooth (short and dense) or wire (rough, longer, and shaggy). The small Pequeño is terrier-sized; the medium Médio is similar to a small Greyhound; the large Grande is a substantial hunting hound. All share the characteristic upright ears and alert, fox-like expression.

The Portuguese Podengo is depicted in 15th and 16th-century Portuguese art, including paintings from the Age of Exploration when Portuguese sailors carried Podengos on ships to control rodent populations.
The three sizes of Portuguese Podengo were not created by deliberate breeding but arose naturally from different hunting requirements — the small for rabbit, medium for fox and deer, large for wild boar.
The wire-coated Portuguese Podengo Pequeno became famous internationally after a rescue dog named Winn Dixie — the inspiration for a popular American children's novel and film — was portrayed by a Podengo.
