The Story

The Polish Lowland Sheepdog (PON) is a shaggy, medium-sized herding dog from the plains of Poland — one of the ancestors of the Bearded Collie and possibly other European shaggy herding breeds. The PON nearly went extinct during WWII but was revived through the efforts of Polish veterinarian Danuta Hryniewicz and a single breeding male named Smok. The breed is notable for its excellent memory — Polish shepherds noted that PONs could memorise entire flocks and notice any missing animal, a trait verified in modern behaviour studies.

Fun Facts

01

The PON's famous memory for individual sheep has been scientifically studied — researchers found that individual PONs could correctly identify photographs of sheep they had worked with previously, even after months of separation.

02

The entire post-WWII PON breeding programme traces to a single male named Smok (Dragon) — a dog belonging to Polish veterinarian Danuta Hryniewicz who recognised the breed's near-extinction and began a systematic recovery programme.
