The Story

The Pandikona is a primitive hunting dog from the Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh — a lean, athletic, independent breed used by tribal communities for hunting small to medium game in the rocky Deccan terrain. Like the Carolina Dog and Australian Dingo, the Pandikona has a primitive, naturally evolved body type well-suited to its environment. It is a true primitive breed — not selectively bred for appearance but shaped by its working environment over many generations. The breed is relatively unknown even within India and is at risk of disappearing as traditional hunting practices decline.

Fun Facts

01

The Pandikona's name derives from the Pandikona region of Kurnool district — the breed has been developed and maintained entirely by tribal hunting communities without any formal breed registration or selection programme.

02

Despite its primitive appearance, the Pandikona is reported by tribal hunters to be capable of coursing deer over rocky terrain at high speed — combining sighthound speed with the sure-footedness needed for the rocky Deccan landscape.
