The Story
The Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog is the first American dog breed — a unique cross between the dogs of the Choctaw and other indigenous peoples of Louisiana with the Spanish "war dogs" (likely mastiff-type dogs) brought by Hernando de Soto's expedition in 1539. The resulting dog, used by indigenous peoples for hunting wild hog and game, was developed by Louisiana Creole hunters into the Catahoula — the only dog breed native to Louisiana and the state dog. The breed's unique "cat foot" (webbed paws that spread like a cat's) allows it to run across muddy swamp terrain. It uses a unique "treeing" technique for hunting wild hog — forming a "fence" with multiple dogs to contain the hog until the hunter arrives.

A large, powerful, athletic working dog with highly variable appearance due to the wide colour range. The merle pattern producing "leopard" spotting is most characteristic. The "cracked glass" or heterochromatic eyes — each eye may be blue, brown, or multi-coloured — are striking. The webbed feet are unusual.

Fun Facts
The Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog is the only American dog breed to originate in a documented cross between indigenous American dogs and European colonial dogs — the Choctaw's dogs and de Soto's Spanish war dogs in 1539. This makes it the first truly American breed.
The Catahoula is the only dog breed known to use a "fence" hunting technique — multiple dogs form a loose circle around a cornered wild hog, blocking its escape routes while keeping just out of reach of the hog's tusks. The "fence" is maintained until the hunter arrives.
