The Story
The Istrian Shorthaired Hound is one of the oldest documented hound breeds in the Balkans — depicted in Venetian frescoes from the 15th century and described in Dalmatian chronicles. It is the most widespread hunting dog of Croatia and Slovenia, used for hunting hare and fox in the rocky Mediterranean scrubland and forest of the Istrian Peninsula. The breed's distinctive orange-and-white colouring and melodious voice make it immediately recognisable. Two Istrian hound varieties exist: the shorthaired (older) and the rough-coated (developed later).
