The Story
The Cirneco dell'Etna is an ancient Sicilian sighthound — one of the oldest dog breeds in the Mediterranean, depicting on Sicilian coins from 500 BCE and documented as unchanged for over 2,500 years. It hunted rabbits on the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna, navigating jagged lava rock terrain in extreme heat with minimal water — making it extraordinarily tough and heat-tolerant. DNA studies confirm it is one of the most ancient domestic dog lineages in Europe, closely related to the Pharaoh Hound, Ibizan Hound, and other Mediterranean primitive breeds. Small and elegant, it is now primarily a companion and show dog but retains its working hunting instincts.

Fun Facts
The Cirneco dell'Etna appears on Sicilian coins from approximately 500 BCE — making it one of the few dog breeds with ancient artistic documentation of its appearance. The breed looks essentially unchanged from these ancient depictions.
The Cirneco can hunt in extreme heat on the volcanic lava fields of Mount Etna with minimal water — an ability unmatched by most other breeds, reflecting thousands of years of adaptation to one of the most challenging hunting environments in Europe.
