The Story
The Chippiparai is a sighthound of the Tamil royal courts — a slender, elegant dog developed in the Madurai area of Tamil Nadu and historically associated with the Vijayanagara Empire and Madurai Nayak rulers. The breed was a symbol of royalty and loyalty — traditionally given as a gift only to royalty and high nobility, never sold. The silver-grey variety in particular was associated with the highest honour. The Chippiparai was used for coursing hare, deer, and other game in the open terrain around Madurai. It is now listed as a threatened breed.

Fun Facts
The silver-grey Chippiparai was such a symbol of royalty in Tamil culture that it was traditionally gifted only to kings and the highest nobility — selling or giving one to a commoner was considered an insult to the dog and its lineage.
The Chippiparai and the closely related Kanni ("pure" in Tamil) are both considered sacred breeds in Tamil Nadu — the Kanni in particular was given as a wedding gift and was never sold, considered a sign of absolute trust.
