The Story
The Chihuahua is the world's smallest dog breed and one of the oldest dog breeds in the Americas, with ancient roots in the pre-Columbian civilisations of Mexico. The Techichi, a small companion dog of the Toltec civilisation, is believed to be the direct ancestor. Despite — or because of — their tiny size, Chihuahuas are among the most spirited, confident, and characterful dogs in the world. They come in two coat varieties (smooth and long coat) and a remarkable range of colours. Their longevity (often 14–16+ years) makes them an exceptionally long-term commitment.

Physical Profile

The Chihuahua's defining features are its apple-domed skull, large erect ears, and luminous, slightly prominent round eyes. The body is compact and slightly longer than tall. Two coat varieties — smooth (short, glossy, soft) and long coat (soft, flat or slightly wavy with feathering on ears, feet, and tail). Colour variety is extraordinary.

Temperament & Personality
Chihuahuas are bold, self-important, and intensely devoted — typically to one person above all others. They are famously suspicious of strangers and protective of their primary person. Their fierce loyalty combined with their size means they can be snappy and reactive without proper socialisation. They are not recommended for households with young children due to their fragility and reactive nature. Their confidence and intelligence make them capable in training, though their independence requires patience.

Care & Wellness
Professional Care Protocol
- •Despite tiny size, Chihuahuas need daily exercise and mental stimulation — they become bossy and vocal without it. They chill easily and should wear a dog coat in cold weather. Teeth need daily brushing; dental disease is the leading cause of health problems. Nails grow quickly. The smooth coat needs minimal grooming; the long coat requires brushing 2–3 times weekly.
Nutrition Notes
Hypoglycaemia is life-threatening in Chihuahuas — keep honey or Nutri-Cal on hand for emergencies. Feed 3-4 small meals daily, especially puppies. Dental disease near-universal; dental kibble and daily brushing required. Obesity common despite small size — strict portions.

Senior Care
One of the longest-lived breeds (14-20 years). Dental disease is the #1 senior issue — expect multiple extractions. Collapsing trachea. Luxating patella. Heart disease (mitral valve). Hydrocephalus in apple-head Chihuahuas (open fontanelle). Surprisingly long-lived when well-cared-for.

Health Overview
Patellar luxation is very common. Hydrocephalus (water on the brain) can occur due to the domed skull. A soft spot (molera) on the skull, like a human fontanelle, is present at birth in most Chihuahuas and may persist — requires careful handling. Dental disease is nearly universal. Hypoglycaemia in puppies and small adults. Tracheal collapse occurs.

Average estimates as of 2025
Long-coat Chihuahuas typically more expensive than smooth-coat. Apple-head (round skull) vs deer-head (longer snout) — deer-head is healthier but apple-head is show standard. Merle pattern carries significant health risks. Very fragile — not suitable for homes with toddlers.

Fun Facts
The Chihuahua is the smallest breed in the world by official AKC/FCI standards — the record for smallest dog ever is held by a Chihuahua named Miracle Milly, measuring 9.65 cm (3.8 in) tall.
Ancient pottery, paintings, and figurines from pre-Columbian Mexico depict dogs nearly identical to modern Chihuahuas, confirming the breed's ancient American origins.
Chihuahuas have the largest brain-to-body size ratio of any dog breed — a fact that their owners sometimes invoke to explain their outsized personality.
