The Story
The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is the most powerful and tenacious of all retriever breeds — developed on the shores of Chesapeake Bay specifically to retrieve hundreds of ducks per day from icy, rough waters in freezing temperatures. While Labradors and Goldens are gentle and accommodating, the Chessie is assertive, independent, and considerably less forgiving. Their oily double coat is uniquely water-repellent — water simply rolls off rather than soaking in.

Physical Profile

The Chessie's most distinctive feature is its coat — a short, thick, wavy outer coat with a dense, fine, woolly undercoat containing natural oils that cause water to bead and roll off. Colour is any shade of brown, sedge, or deadgrass. The eyes are light yellow-amber — unusual and distinctive.

Temperament & Personality
Chessies are intelligent, dominant, and considerably more independent than other retrievers. They are loyal and devoted to their family but less universally friendly than Labradors — they can be aloof with strangers and dog-selective. They are not suitable for first-time dog owners.

Care & Wellness
Professional Care Protocol
- •Chessies need 1.5–2+ hours of vigorous daily exercise including swimming. The coat's natural oils make it water-repellent and self-cleaning — frequent bathing strips the oils and is not recommended. Brushing 1–2 times weekly.
Nutrition Notes
Working retriever — needs calorie-dense food when active. Bloat risk. Joint supplements essential for field-working dogs. Coat is oily/water-resistant — omega-3 supports this natural property. EIC (exercise-induced collapse) in some lines.

Fun Facts
The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is the only retriever breed indigenous to America, developed specifically to handle the brutal conditions of Chesapeake Bay duck hunting.
The breed traces to two Newfoundland dogs rescued from a shipwreck off Maryland in 1807 — a dog named Sailor and a bitch named Canton.
The Chessie is the official dog of the state of Maryland.
