The Story
The Catalan Sheepdog is the herding dog of Catalonia — a versatile, long-coated herder that has worked the Pyrenees and Catalan plains for centuries. Like the PON and Portuguese Sheepdog, the Catalan is a shaggy herding dog of the Ibero-European tradition. During the Spanish Civil War it was used as a messenger and guard dog, and it retains strong working instincts. It is the official dog of the Catalan region and appears in medieval Catalan artwork. Rare outside Spain and neighbouring countries.

Fun Facts
The Catalan Sheepdog has a unique seasonal moult — it sheds its coat in two halves. The front half of the coat (front legs and chest) falls out first in spring, while the rear half (hindquarters) retains the longer coat until later, giving the dog a distinctive tuxedo-like half-and-half appearance for several weeks.
During the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), Catalan Sheepdogs were trained and deployed as military dogs by both Republican and Nationalist forces — evidence of their intelligence, trainability, and adaptability.
