The Story
The Bluetick Coonhound is named for its distinctive coat pattern — dark blue ticking on white, created by intermingled black and white hairs that produce an overall blue-grey mottled appearance. Descended from French staghounds (Grand Bleu de Gascogne) crossed with American coonhounds, the Bluetick has been maintained as a separate breed from the English Coonhound since 1946. It is the mascot of the University of Tennessee — "Smokey," the Tennessee Volunteers' live mascot dog, is always a Bluetick Coonhound. A cold-nosed breed that can track very old scent trails.
