The Story

The Belgian Laekenois is the rarest and most distinctive of the four Belgian Shepherd varieties — distinguished by its rough, wiry, tousled coat that gives it a scruffy, unkempt appearance compared to the sleek Malinois, long-haired Tervuren, and smooth-coated Groenendael. Named for the Laeken area of Brussels (where the Belgian Royal Family's residence is located), the Laekenois was reportedly favoured by Queen Marie Henriette of Belgium who kept them at the royal castle. The breed was traditionally used to guard linen drying on the fields around Antwerp.

Physical Profile

Belgian Laekenois

Source: wikimedia

Same strong, well-proportioned body as all Belgian Shepherds — athletic, deep-chested, and alert. The defining characteristic is the rough, wiry, tousled fawn coat with dark overlay, giving a reddish-fawn colour with black tips throughout. The coat should look "unkempt" rather than smooth.

Fun Facts

01

The Belgian Laekenois is the only Belgian Shepherd variety with a rough, wiry coat — and for many years it was the least popular of the four varieties. AKC only granted it full championship status in 2020, the last of the four Belgian Shepherd types to receive this recognition.

02

The breed was traditionally used to guard linen as it dried in the fields around Antwerp — the dog would circle the drying linen continuously to prevent theft, a behaviour that is the historical origin of the herding circle seen in Belgian Shepherds.
