The Story

The Belgian Groenendael (called Belgian Sheepdog in the AKC) is the long-haired, solid black variety of the Belgian Shepherd — arguably the most elegant of the four Belgian varieties, with a flowing all-black coat that gives it a dramatic, striking appearance. Named after the Groenendael estate near Brussels where breeders Nicolas Rose and his wife developed the black long-haired variety in the late 19th century, the Groenendael was one of the first Belgian Shepherds to gain international recognition. It was used extensively in both World Wars as a messenger, ambulance, and police dog.
