The Story
The Barbet is one of the most ancient French dog breeds — documented in French royal hunting records from the 16th century and believed to be the ancestor of the Poodle, Bichon Frisé, Briard, and several other European breeds. King Henry IV of France reportedly kept a Barbet. It was used for hunting waterfowl in the marshes and swamps of France — its name may derive from "barbe" (beard), referring to its characteristic facial hair. The Barbet nearly went extinct after WWII and was painstakingly rebuilt from the few remaining individuals. It was finally recognised by the AKC in 2020.

Fun Facts
King Henry IV of France (1553–1610) was reportedly devoted to his Barbet — contemporary accounts describe him bringing his dog to hunting parties and parliamentary sessions alike.
The Barbet is considered the ancestral breed from which the Poodle descended — the Poodle (German: Pudel = water dog) was developed from the Barbet in Germany, and the curly waterproof coat, retriever instinct, and high intelligence of both breeds reflect their shared heritage.
