The Story

The Bambino ("baby" in Italian) is a cross between the Sphynx (hairless) and the Munchkin (short-legged) — producing a tiny, hairless, short-legged cat. It is one of the most controversial of the "designer" hybrid breeds, combining two structurally unusual traits: hairlessness and shortened limbs. The breed is only experimentally recognised by TICA and is not accepted by CFA. It is considered ethically problematic by many veterinary geneticists for deliberately combining two separate structural mutations in one individual.

Physical Profile

Bambino

Source: wikimedia

The Bambino is tiny — a Sphynx body type but with the noticeably shortened legs of the Munchkin. The hairless skin has the same warm, suede-like feel as the Sphynx. The short legs give the cat a very low, long-bodied, almost dachshund-like profile. Large eyes and large ears are characteristic.

Temperament & Personality

Energetic, playful, and sociable despite the short legs — Bambinos appear entirely unaware of their unusual conformation. They are warm-seeking and people-oriented. Their active nature belies the short-leg limitation.

Care & Wellness

Professional Care Protocol

Ear Cleaning
Nail Trimming
Special Eye Care
Grooming: not-required
  • Weekly bathing for skin oil management. Warm environment essential. Monitor spine and joints — the combination of short legs and hairless skin means both Munchkin joint concerns and Sphynx skin care apply. Avoid high drops.

Nutrition Notes

Sphynx × Munchkin — HIGHEST welfare-concern combination. Lordosis + HCM + skin issues + joint disease. Weekly bathing. Higher metabolism.

Vaccination Schedule

Vaccination Schedule

CoreFVRCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia), Rabies
NoncoreFeLV (Feline Leukaemia Virus), FIV, Chlamydia, Bordetella
AdultboosterFVRCP: annually or every 3 years per product and risk. Rabies: annually or every 3 years per local law. FeLV: annually for at-risk cats. Annual wellness examination recommended.
SpeciesnotesIndoor-only cats have lower vaccine requirements than outdoor cats. FeLV and FIV testing recommended before introducing new cats to a household. Dental disease is the most common preventable health problem in cats — annual dental assessment important. Spay/neuter recommended at 4–6 months.
Puppykittenschedule6–8 weeks: FVRCP; 10–12 weeks: FVRCP booster; 14–16 weeks: FVRCP booster + Rabies. FeLV recommended for outdoor/multi-cat households from 8 weeks.

Senior Care

HCM (Sphynx). Lordosis and pectus (Munchkin). Skin issues. Joint disease. ETHICAL CONCERN: Most controversial cat breed — combines two welfare-affecting mutations. Not recognised by most registries. 12-14 years.

Health Overview

Combines health concerns of both parent breeds — lordosis and joint stress from Munchkin inheritance, HCM and skin infections from Sphynx inheritance. The homozygous Munchkin gene is lethal. Regular veterinary monitoring of spine and joints.

Common Conditions

Name: Lordosis / Spinal Issues • Severity: HIGH • Prevalence: OCCASIONAL • Description: From Munchkin heritage — spinal curvature risk. Regular veterinary spinal assessment.
Name: Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) • Severity: HIGH • Prevalence: COMMON • Description: From Sphynx heritage — very high HCM rates. Annual cardiac screening from age 2 essential.
Name: Skin Infections • Severity: MEDIUM • Prevalence: COMMON • Description: From Sphynx heritage — weekly bathing preventive.

Fun Facts

01

The Bambino is Italian for "baby" — the name reflects both the breed's tiny size and its permanently kitten-like appearance due to the combination of hairlessness and short legs.

02

The Bambino is sometimes used as an example in veterinary ethics discussions about the boundaries of selective breeding — combining two independently controversial structural traits in one breed raises questions about welfare prioritisation.
