The Story
The Vikhan Sheepdog is a medium-sized Himalayan working dog from the remote valleys of Kinnaur and Spiti in Himachal Pradesh — distinct from the larger Gaddi Kutta and Bakharwal, the Vikhan is a herding and guarding dog of the high Trans-Himalayan communities. Developed in the cold desert conditions of Spiti (at elevations of 3,500–4,500 metres), the Vikhan is extremely cold-hardy and adapted to rarefied mountain air. It is little-known outside its home region and is one of the least-studied Indian native breeds.

The Spiti valley, where many Vikhan Sheepdogs are found, is one of the most remote inhabited regions on Earth — a cold desert at 3,800 metres altitude, entirely cut off by snow for 6–8 months of the year. The dogs that survive and work in this environment are among the hardiest in the world.
